JD Allen, born John Daniel Allen III on December 11, 1972, in Detroit, Michigan, is a renowned American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer. Hailed by the New York Times as “a tenor saxophonist with an enigmatic, elegant and hard-driving style,” Allen has established himself as one of the most thoughtful and compelling jazz saxophonists on the contemporary jazz scene.
Allen’s career took off at the age of twenty when he was hired by legendary jazz singer Betty Carter. This opportunity paved the way for collaborations with numerous jazz luminaries, including Lester Bowie, George Cables, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Frank Foster, Louis Hayes, Butch Morris and David Murray. He has also worked with contemporaries such as Cindy Blackman, Dave Douglas, Geri Allen, Meshell Ndegeocello and Wallace Rooney.
In 2008, Allen formed a trio with bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston, which became his primary creative outlet for the next decade. This trio released eight acclaimed albums and toured extensively, even becoming the subject of a think piece in The Atlantic. In 2019, Allen formed a new trio with drummer Nic Cacioppo and bassist Ian Kenselaar, releasing the album “BARRACOON” in 2019 and “Toys / Die Dreaming” in 2020.
Notable departures such as”Queen City 2021″ marks Allen’s first solo saxophone recording and “THIS” in 2023″ marks a significant evolution in his sound, incorporating electronic elements alongside traditional jazz. Collaborating with drummer Gwilym Jones and electronics expert Alex Bonney, Allen explores new musical territories that blend modal and blues-infused melodies with innovative electronic effects. The album aims to bridge the gap between traditional jazz and modern electronic influences, showcasing Allen’s versatility and creativity as a composer.
Throughout his career, Allen has garnered numerous accolades. He has been named “Rising Star” in DownBeat’s Critic’s Poll and has received “Top 10 Album of the Year” honours in over 25 publications worldwide. His albums have consistently earned “Album of the Year” awards in various critics’ polls and notable publications such as the New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, and Downbeat Magazine.
